Understanding the Sickness Behind the Sketch

The Body That Bleeds: Sketching the Strength Behind Silence

This is more than a nude sketch. It’s a portrait of pain, power, and womanhood.

Through this original hand-drawn pencil illustration, I’ve tried to capture the silent suffering and sacred strength that menstruation brings — a reality many women carry behind smiles, silenced in public, and too often underrepresented in art, fashion, and conversation.

The white rose, held delicately yet painfully by the figure, becomes more than a flower. Its thorny stem trails down the torso like a vine of pain, symbolizing the sharp pangs of period cramps, the emotional weight of hormonal changes, and the quiet endurance behind reproductive health challenges.

If you look closely, you’ll notice a small mark on the lower abdomen — a subtle nod to laparoscopic surgery, a procedure many women undergo to manage conditions like PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease) and endometriosis. That tiny scar tells a deeper story: pain often leaves a mark — not only on the body, but on the soul.

The white rose, once pristine, bleeds into a river below — representing the natural flow of blood, pain, and release, all wrapped in silence and strength.

🩸 The Sickness Behind the Silence

This sketch is also a voice for those experiencing real, medically recognized conditions:

  •  PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease): A common hormonal disorder where the ovaries develop multiple immature eggs. It can cause irregular periods, weight fluctuations, hair loss or excess facial hair, and long-term metabolic complications.
  •  Endometriosis: A painful condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, leading to intense cramps, heavy bleeding, fatigue, and fertility issues.
  •  Menorrhagia: Extremely heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding that can cause anemia and severe discomfort.
  •  Dysmenorrhea: Painful menstruation that may be debilitating, especially when linked to the above conditions.

Many women undergo laparoscopic surgery to diagnose and manage these conditions — leaving only a small scar, but carrying lifelong physical and emotional weight.

👗 Why This Matters at Anajoy

As the founder of Anajoy, where we design period-friendly underwear, lightweight home dresses, and breathable, sustainable fashion, this sketch reflects the very reason I create: to help women feel seen, safe, and supported — in their pain, their power, and their healing.

Whether it’s the discomfort of PCOD, the bleeding of menorrhagia, or the quiet suffering of endometriosis, fashion can offer comfort — a second skin that nurtures, not pressures.

Because wellness isn't just about treatment — it's about acknowledgment, care, and thoughtful design that understands real bodies.

💫 This is the art behind our design. This is why we sketch. This is why we stitch.
